Automated car washes rely on their machines to thoroughly and safely clean vehicles. The use of sensors keeps the machines from having any damaging impact. The high tech mechanics of these systems are tested and maintained.

Now, you’ve probably noticed, car washes have a sign up advising you to follow certain instructions as you take your vehicle through the wash. These basic tips will go a long way to keep your car protected from any damage. Following these tips allows the machines to work effectively and safely.

You may see a notice posted at your local wash with tips to remind you to keep wipers off and windows up as you move through the process, or to take your hands off the wheel and leave your vehicle in neutral. It also may be suggested that you retract any extended antenna or extended mirror, though the machines are equipped to accommodate small cars, SUVs and large pickup trucks, but if there are any questions about guidelines not posted an attendant will answer those for you.

If you adhere to all the suggestions posted by the car wash and take the recommended precautions discussed here there’s really no reason to worry about the possibility of damage.

Any quality car wash keeps their machines well maintained to keep them functioning as they should, resulting in a satisfying and safe car wash experience. There isn’t much you’ll need to remember. It’s typically a very brief list and just a few vital guidelines you’ll need to follow. These are put in place to protect you and your vehicle. As long as you follow them your car wash experience should only result in a clean and shiny vehicle.

So you’ve followed all guidelines yet still are concerned and see that damage has occurred? Here’s what to do.

What To Do If Damage Occurs

If any damage is noticed after going through the automated wash, and that damage wasn’t there previously, you should immediately notify the wash attendant on duty. They will direct you further.

All professional automated washes have insurance coverage to protect them and their customers. Often when damage occurs at automated washes it is due to not adhering to the attendant’s instructions.

No matter what if one of our customers has a negative experience we want to hear about it. We take customer satisfaction very seriously here at Flagstop Car Wash. Our attendant’s on duty are here to serve you and make sure you have the best car wash experience possible. We guarantee satisfaction and we accept any liability for damage if our machines were the cause. Keeping your vehicle clean and in it’s best condition is important to you and it’s also important to us.

Stop by one of our locations or visit us online to find out more and check out our RVA Wash Club, you can get unlimited washes all for one monthly fee.

It’s no secret that car mechanics are at the most advanced stage they’ve ever been, and that includes your car’s paint coat. However, if you don’t treat your car’s exterior with the consideration it deserves, it will become damaged and lower your car’s overall value. This means washing your car often – and for most people, this means running it through a car wash drive-through.

Most people wonder if it’s worth the money to go through an automated car wash or even if the car wash will be high-quality. Here’s how to tell if an automatic car wash gives your car the care it needs.

What is a Quality Car Wash?

It seems like nothing can hurt the shiny new paint job on a recently-made automobile, but sap, dirt, salt, and weather corrosion can affect your vehicle. It’s vital that whatever wash you give it, it’s thorough. When you’re deciding to use a particular service, signs of a good car wash include friendly staff, good technology, a variety of options, fair pricing, and environmental friendliness.

High-Quality Car Wash Technology

The methods of washing a car’s exterior have changed over the decades to incorporate the latest research and accommodate newer cars. Touch car washes use a conveyer belt to move the vehicle through several cleaning processes. Usually starting with a spray of water and soap, the car’s exterior at all Flagstop Car Wash locations gets cleaned using the latest in Soft Touch Closed Cell Foam Technology. Some car owners are nervous that these materials may mar a car’s surface, but when materials are new and kept well as we keep them at Flagstop, they’re gentle on any paint job and won’t leave scratches or marks – the sign of a quality car wash.

Friendly Staff

An essential part of any business is its customer service. Friendly and knowledgeable staff is vital to the experience. Not only should the team be ready to help, but they should also be able to answer any questions you have about services or the soap or technology used during the wash.

Variety of Options

A quality car wash will have more than just varieties of basic wash packages. Services like a self-wash or DIY station, options for cleaning liquids, and the ability to choose which services your car needs will give you a better overall experience.

Fair Pricing

Getting your car cleaned regularly shouldn’t be gouging, and plenty of places charge far too much for essential services. A quality car wash will have options and still allow you to get the best bang for your buck. At Flagstop Car Wash, we offer the RVA Wash Club membership, enabling unlimited washes with a simple monthly bill.

Environmentally Friendly

Many people don’t know that automatic car washes are better for the environment than washing them yourself in your home. When you do that, the chemicals and cleaners you use for your car can spill out into the street, damaging wildlife and making their way into the water system. The water is recycled and properly disposed of at an automatic car wash, so you don’t have to worry about your footprint.

If you need a high-quality car wash covering all these bases and more, it comes to Flagstop Car Wash. We have 11 convenient locations around the Richmond area, and our staff is ready to help you at any time.

We all know it’s better to keep a vehicle clean rather than dirty. Riding around in a filthy car can be uncomfortable and can even be unsafe. Did you know that not washing your car regularly can actually cost you? Here’s some ways that can happen.

A neglected exterior can damage your paint job.

As dirt and grime build up on your car’s exterior it can cause permanent damage to the paint job as the dirt settles in and works its way into any pits or scratches, eventually leaving you with a car that needs a new paint job or some body work repairs. When you wash the dirt off your car regularly you are prolonging the life of your car’s paint job so it’s definitely worth keeping up with your car’s exterior cleaning needs.

Letting the interior remain dirty results in ruined cloth seats, carpet and leather.

If you are diligent about cleaning your vehicle’s exterior but tend to neglect the interior, it can ruin your seats and carpeting. As interior dirt and odors build up, especially if you travel with kids and pets, it will become more difficult to remove. Odors and stains from any spills will settle into the fabric resulting in having to do a professional deep cleaning. This can mean more time and money at your expense.

Dirt and grime on your windshield can result in safety issues.

When dirt builds up on your windshield it can result in decreased visibility. Certain debris that tends to get on windshields can also leave a residue that will be very difficult to wash off with just basic cleaners, if allowed to sit for long periods. Bird droppings and tree sap can be near impossible to remove without an extra level of cleaning such as a polishing bar made just for these tough jobs. It can also be very hard on your windshield wipers if you try to wash hardened dirt away with just your washer fluid. If it’s bad enough you may need to repair or replace your auto glass.

Salt and road grime can take a real toll on the undercarriage of your vehicle.

Depending on winter weather conditions where you live, the chemicals used to keep the roads safe during wintry weather events can lead to extreme damage to your vehicle if they aren’t rinsed off regularly. Salt and ice melt chemicals can damage your exterior paint and cause rust. The underneath of your car is especially vulnerable when exposed to the products used on roadways. The rust will spread if it isn’t addressed by a repair shop and it could affect your car’s driveability.
When exterior and interior auto cleaning becomes a regular habit you’ll avoid what could become added expenses to your vehicle. At Flagstop Car Wash our convenient locations and state-of-the-art express washes make it easy to keep your car clean inside and out. Unlimited washes with RVA Wash Club gives you the freedom to wash your car as often as you want for one monthly fee. Stop by and see us today or visit us online to get started.

When your car is dirty and you’re trying to decide which method of washing is best it really depends on a few factors. Since automatic car washes are very safe, thorough and widely available it makes sense to use these services, especially if you’re crunched for time or physically unable to scrub your vehicle by hand. Here’s 5 major differences and a little more detail about them.

1. Time, Time, Time

Time is an obvious advantage of going to an automatic car wash. When you are in a hurry and can’t afford to take the time out of your busy day to wash your vehicle by hand, time is a huge factor. Depending on how thorough you are, washing your vehicle could take at least an hour to complete and that’s not even including the time to get all your supplies together. On the contrary, an automatic car wash can be done in just a few minutes and then you can be on your way.

2. Convenience

Having access to an automatic car wash will certainly be a huge convenience especially in inclement weather. We all know the importance of keeping our vehicles clean even during the winter.  All the winter road grime really needs to be washed off on a regular basis. When it’s a nice spring or autumn day hand washing your vehicle outdoors might not be a big deal, but no one wants to stand in the pouring rain or harsh winter weather while washing the grime off their car.

3. Effectiveness

Washing by hand and automatic car washes are both actually effective, but hand washing a car is only as thorough as the individual doing the work. Most people take their time to thoroughly wash their vehicle, yet it’s easy to overlook an area or not put as much “elbow grease” into a section of it as is needed. You may be surprised to know that automatic car washes can actually be more effective. The use of high-powered water and detergents made especially for tackling tough, stuck-on dirt, along with the large machine powered brushes can actually reach areas you might otherwise miss.

4. Environmental impact

The environmental impacts of handwashing versus using an automatic wash are worth mentioning. When most people wash their vehicles they don’t realize how much water they’re using. Automatic car washes are typically more environmentally friendly as they use a measured amount of water and only enough detergents to do a thorough job, so the waste is minimal and so is the environmental impact.

5. Affordability

It’s not too expensive to handwash your own vehicle as long as you already have all the supplies you need. An automatic car wash is very affordable too. At Flagstop Car Wash our RVA Wash Club gives you the affordability and convenience to get a high quality wash all for one low monthly cost that can fit into any budget. With convenient hours and locations, as well as free vacuums and other services, you’ll have access to all you’ll need to get the job done.

Keep your car clean throughout the year with regular visits to Flagstop Car Wash. With our clean, friendly services, we will help keep your car looking good year-round.

Traveling in your car can be a fun way to spend time with friends and family. Sometimes traveling with passengers is a necessity, or maybe it’s a road trip. These 5 steps will help you and your car be prepared for any travel time with passengers.

  1. Give your vehicle a thorough deep cleaning. A clean vehicle inside and out makes it not only look better but also can make it drive better. That’s right! Dirt builds up on the exterior and it can affect the “smoothness” of your vehicle as you drive. A lot of road debris and dirt in the air collects on and under your car. When you know you’re going to have passengers, whether it’s a routine trip or a road trip with friends it will be worth it to pay some extra attention to the interior and exterior. As vehicles tend to do, they can get quite dusty and even collect odors during your daily travels. Just routine driving to and from work or running errands can create an accumulation of odors. Think of all that happens in your vehicle; most people drink coffee and eat snacks as they travel about, and if you have kids or pets, well that’s a whole other story.
  2. Get some accessories. The inside of your vehicle can really get worn over time. Whether it’s your floor mats, car seats or cup holders, these are items which sometimes need some help. It’s simple enough to clean or replace the mats, and get some seat covers if your seats are worn, and invest in cup holders if your car has none for passengers. Also, while traveling the sun can really warm up the interior of your car, window screens to block the sun can help keep passengers comfortable. These accessories are a great way to keep everyone happy during your travels.
  3. Do a safety check. Safety is important, not only for the driver but also for the passengers. In fact it’s the driver’s responsibility to keep the passengers as safe as possible. It’s good to occasionally perform a basic safety check on essential safety features. Check that the seat belts are working properly and be aware of any defective airbags. Ensuring your passengers well-being while traveling in your vehicle is an easy but vital task for obvious reasons.
  4. Routine Maintenance. This is important even if not carrying passengers. It’s never fun to have something go wrong like a flat tire and not be prepared. Just basic routine maintenance checks like making sure you have a good spare will help avoid a major inconvenience. Check your tire pressure since you’ll have more weight in your car. Be sure your AC/heating system is functioning properly, as no one needs to freeze or get overheated while traveling.
  5. Extra water and snacks. Depending on the passengers, whether it’s your kids and their friends or it’s some of your adult friends, having extra beverages or snacks can help to avoid extra stops especially if you’re on a long road trip. Bring a variety of road-friendly snacks and beverages, and be sure to have a small travel size trash container so your vehicle can stay tidy.

Most people have used a car wash in their lifetime, and many enjoy driving through the processes in their cars. Nozzles, sprays, bubbles, driers – a car wash is made up of several different sections, alternating to create the best possible results. Every piece in a car wash has a purpose and a function, making it the most effective way to get your car squeaky clean. This process is referred to as a conveyor wash, as the motorized belt will allow you to sit and relax while it takes you through the wash and rinse cycles. Here’s a little more about what each part of a car wash does.

Conveyor Belt

The first thing you’ll notice is the actual conveyor you place your car on. When you get on, you put your car in neutral and let the conveyor belt do the work. It’ll take you through each step of the car washing process. A well-maintained conveyor ensures a smooth experience for our customers, every time.

Pre-Soak Nozzles

The first thing that’ll happen after the conveyor belt enters the automated car wash is that your car’s presence will trigger the system that works in steps to clean your car. You’ll notice water and special car-cleaning chemicals being sprayed at your car. This is known as the pre-soak. The solution used for this is a special compound that helps to loosen dirt, dust, and other substances covering your vehicle. It wets the car and prepares it for more intense scrubbing and bubbly soaps, contributing to the overall cleanliness.

Tire Applicators and Nozzles

As you go through the pre-soak or the wash, you may notice that there are nozzles both above and below. The lower set of nozzles is there to tackle the dirt and grime that is built up in your tires. Tire maintenance is vital, and too much dirt and debris in your tires may end up doing serious functional damage to your vehicle. It also affects your safety, which is why high-pressure nozzles are there to blast away even the most difficult, stuck-on grime. These nozzles also spray a slightly different solution, one that is specifically meant to dissolve brake dust and brighten the look of your tires. Sometimes the bottom nozzles are also known as the undercarriage wash part of the car wash.

Mitter Curtain

You can usually picture the curtain in the car wash – long strips of fabric that are designed to rub the soap in and loosen dirt and grime as a series of mechanisms pulls them back and forth.

Foam Applicators and Deep Cleaning Products

After a pre-rinse and scrub from the curtains, you get to the intense soap-down. The car wash sprays your car with a deep-cleaning foam that penetrates filth and muck and is guaranteed to remove any difficult substances from the exterior. As your car gets the foamy wash, you’ll also notice large scrubbers doing their job alongside. The combination of this particular soap and wash will leave your car looking like new once it is rinsed and dried.

While DIY washing is definitely a choice for some people, the best way to keep your car clean and maintained is to take it down to Flagstop Car Wash, with a growing list of convenient locations around Central VA. Each part of our wash has a specific purpose and order to make sure that you get the best clean possible. Most of our locations also have vacuums and self-cleaning stations, so that you can keep your car clean inside and out.

Springtime often brings more severe conditions which can be better met with just a little preparation. What steps can you take to be sure it’s ready? Here are a few checklist items to consider:

  1. Pollen is a big problem in the spring. As the trees begin to bloom pollen counts start to go up drastically. No matter where you park, your car will accumulate a large amount on its surface as springtime progresses. If allergies are an issue for you, keeping pollen off your vehicle is vital for your health. The less that is allowed to accumulate the less you’ll be exposed to as you drive. Regular washes will help keep it clean and free of pollen through the warmer months.
  2. Bugs and bird droppings are a big problem too in the spring. Birds and bugs are more active in the spring and your vehicle will pay the price unless you are proactive. Allowing bird droppings and bugs to sit too long on your exterior can actually have a negative impact on a vehicle’s paint.  Regular washes will help to keep your car looking its best and free of build-up from these elements that can’t be completely avoided. A good wax on your vehicle will also help to protect your vehicle’s exterior.
  3. Maintenance is very important during the entire year, but especially as the spring weather comes. More people will be traveling and more severe storms are common during the spring, so keeping your vehicle maintained will go a long way to keep travel safe as can be. Make spring a time to check your fluids in your car, including washer fluid, so you can keep the window clear of pollen and other debris. There’s a good chance winter’s extreme conditions have exhausted the reservoir so plan on topping it off. Check tire pressure and be aware of any unusual wear on your tires, it may be time for a rotation. Winter can be particularly harsh on certain vehicle parts too, especially rubber components such as wiper blades. Early spring is a good time to check and replace them if necessary.
  4. Spring often means vacation time for many. If you’re traveling in your car you want it to be comfy and clean. A good interior cleaning, vacuuming and a freshen up detail is always a great idea to improve your vacation travel time. At Flagstop we offer free vacuuming and other DIY detail services, as well as a full supply of vending machines with all the products you’ll need to keep your car clean.

Consider a membership for unlimited car washes at any of our convenient locations. Flagstop Car Wash offers unlimited washes at one budget-friendly monthly price with our popular RVA Wash Club. We offer many convenient locations throughout Virginia and all the products you’ll ever need to keep it clean inside and out. We look forward to helping you keep your car looking its best throughout all the seasons.

Every season brings a few new reasons to wash your car more often. In the winter, it’s vital that you wash often to remove any salt, slush, and built-up debris. Springtime brings new concerns. Between the bugs, pollen, and other road concerns, you may find yourself needing to take your vehicle to the car wash more often. In fact, spring is the busiest season for most car washes!

Springtime Cleaning for Your Car

Fall and spring have similar concerns for motorists. Once the snow melts in the spring, you’ll notice plenty of dust and debris on the road that can muck up your vehicle. Leaves and rocks are a concern as they may get lodged into places that affect the usability of your car. Taking it to a car wash is a better idea than washing it at home, as the jets of water can blast away any unwanted bits and fragments.

Spring also brings bugs! From mosquitos to bees, to other flying critters, you won’t be able to ignore the splatters across your windshield for long. Visibility is crucial, and you should always take care to wash your windshield. Leaving bug splatters attracts more dust and dirt, which will impede your ability to drive safely on the road. Plus, industry experts agree that the leftover insect parts are quite acidic and can cause damage to the exterior if allowed to stay there for long periods of time.

Pollen is another concern during this season. It’s lovely when everything starts blooming, but you may soon notice that your car is coated in a thin sticky blanket of yellow. Not only is it an allergy concern for most people, but the sticky pollen will attract bugs, dust, and dirt to your car if you don’t wash it away quickly. For those that suffer from allergies in the spring, washing your car often will help limit your exposure to pollen and hopefully leave you feeling better!

Dirt, dust, pollen, and bugs that coat the exterior of the car aren’t just an eyesore. They can do lasting damage to the paint and even cause pockmarks. To keep your car in the best of shape and make sure it has a great resale value, it’s important to wash your car often. It’s part of routine maintenance.

Finally, any time is a great time to do some cleaning, inside and out! Many people do spring cleaning in their homes and forget about their vehicles. At Flagstop Car Wash, you can clean your interior (DIY) as well as your exterior. Once you’re done sorting through the stuff lying around, you should give your seats, rugs, and other interior parts a good cleaning. Dust and dirt get into the car as you drive too! If you have pets you may need to vacuum your interior often for health and safety’s sake. Plus, springtime brings plenty of virus, cold, and other germs – and as we’ve all learned from the recent pandemic, it’s a good idea to disinfect every once in a while!

Tree sap is a point of worry for most vehicle owners during the summer. Though sap doesn’t immediately damage the paint job, it shouldn’t be ignored. Sap that is allowed to sit all season and adhere itself to the car will ruin the paint job in the long run – but in the short run, it looks unattractive and will cause more dust and dirt to stick to the car. Plus, if it is stuck to the windshield or mirrors it may cause visibility issues as you drive.

Sap comes from a number of different kinds of trees including pine, palm, pecan, and sycamore trees, making this a problem around the country. If you use harsh substances to try and remove the sap, it may also damage your car. Here are a few ways you can go about removing tree sap without the frustration of possible damage.

Baking Soda as a Cleaning Agent

If the sap is fresh and you act quick, a solution of baking soda and warm water can be applied to the sap-covered spots. Allow this solution to sit for a few minutes, then use a towel to wash it away. Baking soda is excellent for breaking apart oily and sticky substances without damaging the car’s exterior. However, this may not work if the sap is old or has been stuck to the car for some time.

Rubbing Alcohol or Hand Sanitizer

Another trusted method for removing sap is alcohol. You can choose a rubbing alcohol you have at home, or a hand sanitizer that has a large percentage of alcohol. Similar to the baking soda method, you want to apply the alcohol to the sticky spots and let it sit for a minute before using a towel to rub it away. Alcohol disturbs the sap molecules and makes it easier to wash away large concentrations. However, you may find that you need to buff and wash the car afterwards to get rid of the dull-looking spots left over.

Margarine, Oil, Baking Grease

Oils are fantastic for cleaning up just about any mess, as oily substances overpower and dissolve stickiness and dirt. Of course, you should take care when applying oil or grease as the oil is difficult to remove from your car. Use small amounts and have a bucket with water and washcloth handy to wash it right away. You can use just about any oil-based substance, or oil-based cleaner. Vegetable oil or cooking grease are two things you can normally find in your kitchen, but you can get a more potent substance like turpentine or lighter fluid at the store.

Commercial Cleaning Products

You can buy over-the-counter products specifically for cleaning cars. These will not damage the vehicle’s surface but don’t always work on tough spots.

Remember that you may have to use your nails or a gentle tool to remove what’s left of the sap, even after using these methods. If you have a wax coat on your car or find that the cleaning product removed most of it but has spread a small amount over the car, leaving it looking dull, you may have to buff it out and apply wax.

Professional Car Washes Have the Highest Success Rate for Removing Sap

If you’re a DIY kind of car person, we understand. A lot of people chose to treat their vehicles themselves. However, DIY methods may not be the most effective for removing a difficult substance like tree sap. The best thing to do is to take your car to the pros. At Flagstop Car Wash, all of our locations have the cleaning products necessary to remove even the most stubborn dirt.

There are two types of car owners: those that won’t let any food or drinks anywhere near their car, especially the interior, and those that don’t mind a few crumbs. In either case, accidents do happen and it is possible to clean your car’s interior well enough that it won’t cause a permanent stain. It’s always a good idea to limit the consumption of drinks and foods in a moving vehicle for safety reasons, but here are some tips on cleaning your car’s interior in case an accident does occur.

Car Cleaning Products You’ll Need

Keeping a bag or stash of a few key cleaning products in the trunk or in the pockets is always a good idea. If you act quickly, you can offset the damage. Think about stocking your car with a handheld vacuum, fabric cleaning wipes, antibacterial wipes, and a towel or microfiber cloth. These tools will help you deal with any spills right away, pre-cleaning them to minimize stains. Once you have the time you can use a few household products to help get your seats clean, like baking soda, club soda, lemon juice, non-gel toothpaste, and fabric markers and sprays.

How to Clean a Stain Without Damaging Your Car’s Interior

You may have the urge to scrub a stain out of a car seat like you would a carpet, but a vehicle is more complex and you don’t want to do anything that requires a lot of water spilling around (it can seep into the carpets, mold, or damage the floor of the car) or spray a ton of cleaning spray that smells and can be potentially harmful to you. Here are some of the most popular cleaning tips that work.

On cloth or fabric seats:

  • You can use a spray bottle filled with club soda (rather than pouring it on). Club soda is an effective stain remover, containing water, carbon dioxide, and a few salts. Though there’s no scientific reason for why it is so good at removing stains, it does work. The water helps dilute the staining liquid and as the fabric dries, the stain is gone or much less visible.
  • Make a baking soda solution. Combine a ¼ of a tablespoon of baking soda with warm water and use a cloth to scrub away the stain. If the stain is persistent, spray or soak the area with a towel with this solution for 30 mins, then use a clean towel with warm water to wipe it down.
  • Make a water and laundry detergent solution that isn’t too soapy, and use a carpet or fabric brush with tough bristles, dipping it into the solution and scrubbing.

For leather seats:

  • Leather seats are more expensive and require more attention, but are durable and mostly stain resistant. If you do have a stain or spill something sticky, you can use water mixed with rubbing alcohol to clean the seat.
  • Use a toothbrush and a non-gel toothpaste to scrub away any stains.
  • There are different qualities and types of leather so a spot test should be done on an inconspicuous area to be sure the leather doesn’t get blotchy from the cleaning solution. There are also cleaners made specifically for leather.

Professional Interior Cleaning Services

If you have a stubborn stain that won’t come out, or simply don’t have the time to work on it, you can purchase professional products to help ease the cleaning process. It’s a great way to freshen up your car and ensure your vehicle is clean and pleasant.

If you use your vehicle for work, such as rideshares, then it’s a good idea to keep your car clean  and presentable at all times. Bring your car to Flagstop Car Wash and rely on the experts to get your vehicle clean through our wash tunnels and take advantage of our vacuuming areas. With a number of convenient locations around the Richmond area, it’s quick and easy to keep your car looking great inside and out.
